The floatplane points west toward the setting sun as the shores of Freshwater Cove fall further behind. Montgomery Island beckons. The reef, and its channels, mask schools of mackeral and tuna and dolphins and dugong. The dropping tide makes for brilliant “rivers of gold”: one of the most beautiful reefs in the world. The resulting image brings brush-stroke swirls of blue and gold: the work of nature, the impressionist painter.
