This tour is designed for everyone — from serious photographers wanting to develop their skills and learn new techniques, to complete beginners who simply want to experience Broome at its most beautiful and see it through a different lens.
If you shoot with a smartphone, a compact camera or a professional DSLR — you are very welcome. I will show you how to get the best out of whatever you have with you.
Absolutely — and it is a particularly wonderful experience for both.
Solo travellers will find themselves in a small, friendly group of like-minded people who share a love of beauty and an appetite for the rare. With a maximum of four participants the atmosphere is relaxed and personal rather than a large group tour.
Couples will find this a genuinely special shared experience — rising before dawn together, chasing something most people will never see, in some of Broome's most beautiful and wild places.
This is a morning photography experience first and foremost — an opportunity to spend three to four hours in some of Broome's most beautiful and wild places at the most extraordinary time of day, with a photographer who has spent almost 30 years capturing them.
It is also a chase. On any given morning during Broome's dry season there is a chance — not a guarantee, but a genuine chance — that a white rainbow will appear. If it does, we will give everything we have to get you the best possible images of it.
Is this a photography workshop or an experience?
This is an experience first and foremost — not a workshop. What it is, is an opportunity to spend three to four hours with a photographer who has worked around the world for almost 30 years — to see how I read light, find compositions and make the most of Broome's extraordinary landscapes at the most beautiful time of day. You will learn a great deal simply by being there and asking questions. That is the best kind of learning.
Will I definitely see a white rainbow?
No — and anyone who tells you otherwise is not being honest with you. White rainbows appear on fewer than a dozen mornings throughout Broome's dry season and their appearance cannot be guaranteed. What I can guarantee is that we will chase the conditions with everything we have — and that the morning will be wonderful regardless of whether one appears.
Prior to your tour I will make contact to find out a little about you, what you are hoping to get out of the experience and whether there are any particular aspects of Broome you would love to photograph. This helps me tailor the tour to get the best possible outcome for everyone.
We will meet at the Broome Visitor Centre carpark 15 minutes prior to our scheduled departure time. We depart at dawn — the exact time will vary through the season and I will confirm your departure time when I get in touch before the tour.
From there we head out to carefully chosen locations selected for their light, composition and the unique character they bring to the Kimberley landscape. As the morning light builds from the first pale glow of dawn through to the rich warmth of mid morning I will walk you through how I see and photograph this landscape — what I look for, how I read the light and how to find the shot within the shot.
Along the way there will be good conversation and — if the opportunity presents itself — the chance to meet and photograph some of Broome's remarkable characters.
And if conditions align and a white rainbow appears — we will stop everything and chase it with everything we have.
We return to Broome after approximately three to four hours. And then, if you're up for it — a swim. Crocodiles and sharks permitting.
Tours are strictly limited to a maximum of four participants to ensure a genuinely intimate and personalised experience.
That limit is deliberate. Four people is small enough that every participant receives genuine individual attention — time to ask questions, to experiment and to absorb. It also means that when we arrive at a location we arrive quietly, without disrupting the very thing we have come to photograph.
A minimum of four participants is required for the tour to proceed. If minimum numbers are not reached guests will be notified and offered rescheduling or a credit.

What does the tour cost?
Standard pricing is as follows:

When do I make payment?
Full payment is required at the time of booking. This confirms your place on the tour and ensures your date is exclusively reserved for you.
How far in advance should I book?
I recommend booking as early as possible, particularly during peak season between April and October. Tours are strictly limited to four participants and popular dates fill quickly.

If you would prefer to be picked up directly from your accommodation rather than meeting at the Visitor Centre, courtesy pick-up and drop-off is available — just let me know when booking or when I make contact beforehand.
We have a number of locations we work around Broome and the surrounding area. The location chosen on any particular morning will be a function of weather conditions, light and — most importantly — where the conditions look most promising for a white rainbow sighting.
The chase is part of the experience. Some mornings we will know exactly where we are headed. Others we will follow the conditions and see where they lead us.
What I can tell you is that every location we visit is chosen for its beauty — and that Broome at dawn is one of the most extraordinary places on earth to have a camera in your hands.
Courtesy pick-up and drop-off from your Broome accommodation or a convenient central location is included in the price.
If you would prefer to make your own way to the meeting point at the Broome Visitor Centre carpark, that is perfectly fine too — just let me know when booking or when I make contact before the tour.
Either way, I will be in touch beforehand to confirm all the details including your exact pick-up time and location.
The good news is that you don't need any special equipment for this tour. Unlike night sky photography, dawn and morning photography is accessible to almost any camera or device.
That said, here is what I would recommend depending on what you have:
Smartphone photographers: Your phone is perfectly capable of producing beautiful images in the soft light of dawn and the warmth of mid morning. I will show you how to get the absolute best out of it — including settings and techniques most people never discover.
Compact and mirrorless camera users: Bring whatever lenses you have. A versatile zoom lens covering something in the range of 24-70mm is ideal but anything will work. If you have a tripod, bring it — it can be useful in the low light of early dawn.
DSLR and advanced camera users: Bring your camera, your favourite lenses and a tripod. A wide angle lens is wonderful for landscape work but again, whatever you have will produce great results in this quality of light.
The most important thing: Make sure your batteries are fully charged and your memory cards have plenty of space. It sounds obvious but it is surprisingly easy to forget in the excitement of an early Broome morning.
I recommend bringing the following:
This tour is designed to be accessible to a wide range of fitness levels and abilities. Unlike some outdoor experiences in the Kimberley, this is not a strenuous or physically demanding tour.
However, the locations we visit may involve some walking on uneven ground including sandy beaches, pindan tracks and natural terrain. A moderate level of mobility is required. Typically people won't be asked to walk much more than 500 metres one way though sometimes that 500 metres will be required in beach sand.
If you have any mobility concerns or specific needs please get in touch before booking and I will run you through the requirements in more detail. Depending on the number of people coming I may be able to design something that specifically accommodates people with more limited movement.
I want everyone to have the best possible experience and will always try to find solutions that work for your circumstances.
If you have any health issues that might be relevant to you coming on my tour please get in contact to discuss those with me first. I'm not first aid trained and I would be mortified if something happened to anyone on my tour. Even 20 minutes out of Broome can be remote if a health condition is serious.
No question is too small — please just ask so we can make a more informed assessment before you book.
What is your cancellation policy?
All cancellation requests must be submitted in writing via email.
The bottom line? I'm not here to nickel and dime anyone and will do my best to accommodate all reasonable requests. If something comes up please just get in touch and we'll work something out.

What happens if the weather is poor or a white rainbow doesn't appear?
This is first and foremost a morning photography tour of some of Broome's most beautiful and wild places. The white rainbow, should it appear, is the icing on the cake. A morning without one is still a wonderful morning.
If conditions are deemed genuinely unsuitable I will contact you as early as possible to discuss your options. In the event of a weather cancellation you may reschedule to another available date at no additional cost, or receive a full credit.
Can I reschedule my booking?
One complimentary reschedule is available if requested more than seven days prior to your tour. Rescheduling requests made within seven days will be treated as a cancellation and the above policy will apply. That said, I will always do my best to accommodate people so please just reach out and we will see what we can do.
